Kindergarten Connection

August/September 2010

Mrs. Lara's Class                               Volume 11 Issue 1

  Peek at the Week

Welcome to Kindergarten! I expect great things this year! The first weeks of school will be very busy. We will begin establishing rules and procedures for the classroom, as well as developing a sense of our school family.

We will begin by exploring our names. We will count and graph the beats (syllables) in our names, count the letters in our names and graph them by the number of letters, and add our names to the word wall by the initial letter. We will have an introduction to the alphabet by introducing a letter a day, then proceed to concentrate on a letter a week. We will identify and compare shapes. We will also review colors and learn color words. We will do an All About Me/Family and Five Senses unit.

Tips for Home

Research shows that parental involvement in a child’s education is instrumental to their success! Help your child be academically successful by being involved in their school work. Find a special time and place to read together, play games together, and have discussions about their day. Allow your child to verbalize the days' events by asking them divergent questions. Instead of asking, "Did you have a good day?", where the answer is simply a yes or no; ask them to tell you about their day. Encourage them to include details and use complete sentences.
